Phrenology
In the late 1700’s, a German named Franz Joseph Gall came up with the idea that you could tell all about a person’s brain by the bumps on their head. For instance, someone who was very conscientious would have a bump in a specific place- the conscientious place- on the head. Yeah, it sounds pretty crazy nowadays, but it was actually pretty groundbreaking and great when it was first conceived. How much would you love to have your head read?
The idea that the brain was in charge of all these emotions, feelings, and thoughts was really the foundation of modern neuroscience. Also, the idea that different areas of the brain were responsible for different things- also very important. The evolution of how we study the brain is interesting in and of itself, and I think phrenology has it’s own appeal.
